Formal communication has three different forms. You have downward, upward, and horizontal. I would say that downward communication would be the most useful in business. This is where “communication takes place when organizational leaders communicate down the power hierarchy to subordinate organizational members.” (Kreps, 2011 p. 1.5 par. 2) We use downward communication in my business. However, I think the best example is our military. I have never served in the military however, I know they have a chain of command that starts with the Generals and goes down from there. The Generals send out their orders and the Colonels, Majors, Captains, Lieutenants, Sergeants, and the Privates carry out these orders. My manager gives me a task to complete that he is given by his manager and that is how we have our chain of command and use the downward communication.
