Laboratory Report #1
Results and Discussion:
In part A 1.00g of the benzoic acid was recrystallized with a minimum (~70ml) of boiling
water. The dissolved benzoic acid crystals were cooled down to room temperature for
25 minutes.
Crystals appeared on the bottom and top. After it was cooled down to room temperature the new water-
crystals mixture was cooled down in an ice bath for 20 minutes. Then the crystals were vacuum filtered
and dried in an oven at 90°C for 15 minutes. After two days the monoclinic looking crystals were
weighted. The weight was 0.72g. The melting point was determined by SRS OPTIMELT with a range
from 120.4 °C to 121.7°C.
In part B 0.86g of the benzoic acid was also recrystallized with approximately 75ml of boiling
water. However, unlike in part A, the dissolved benzoic acid was just cooled
