Levke Johanna Deutsch Laboratory Report #3 Results and Discussion: The purpose of this experiment was to separate two liquid compounds from each other through distillation. For the simple distillation, a distillation head was used without an extra column. 25ml of 1:1 Methyl Acetate : n-Propyl Acetate and a couple boiling chips were added to a round bottom flask and the distillation head was greased and placed on the round bottom flask. A cooling system composed of a water cycle was installed and the thermometer was placed just under the condenser. The mixture was heated with the help of a heating mantle so that the mixture started to go over in a gas station. The gas went through the condenser and cooled down to its liquid phase again. The distillates were collected in small test tubes by 3ml. After every milliliter the temperature was determined (see table further down). The refractive index was determined after each 3ml to check the purity of the compound. The boiling point of Methyl Acetate 1) is 57°C and the refractive index 2) at 1.360-1.362. For n-Propyl Acetate 1) the boiling point is at 102°C and the refractive index 3) at 1.384. The determined refractive indices are also listed in the table further down.
