Levke Johanna Deutsch Laboratory Report #5 Results and Discussion: Isolation is in Chemistry a main procedure to isolate or separate different compounds from each other. A good way to isolate a compound from another is with the help of a chromatography column. This method works especially with compounds which have different polarities, because the silica gel themselves is polar which means that non-polar compounds tend to elute first through the column. In this experiment L-(-)- Carvone was isolated from Spearmint Oil. Spearmint Oil is composed of many volatile organic compounds, three of the main components of Spearmint Oil are L-(-)- Carvone, (+)-Limonene, and (1R,2R,4R)-Dihydrocarveol. The (+)-Limonene should come out first, followed by the L-(-)-Carvone and then the (1R,2R,4R)-Dihydrocarveol. To the micro chromatography column filled with silica gel was Hexane added to saturate the silica gel. After all or most of the air bubbles were gone two drops of Spearmint Oil were added to the top of the silica gel. Then 4ml of pure Hexane were added and the eluent was collected in small test tubes of 2ml. After 4ml of pure Hexane, the polarity of the eluent was increased and 5ml of 5% Ethyl Acetate/Hexane mixture and then 6ml of 10% Ethyl Acetate/Hexane mixture was added. If all of the eluent has passed through the column, each fraction will be tested to see whether
