Sociology: Readings 6, 7, 8 (9/6) Legacy of Slavery: Took away right of women to marry, free women had no incentive to marry slave men Authority of mother and matriarchal family thus the demasculanization of men Argued that female slaves had a better position than male slaves, they had more power working in the domestic setting, better position than manual labor of men Because women had greater power and independence in slave setting, did not want to accept the white family life with marriage and reliance on men Fundamental point: the conditions of slavery - that marriage among slaves was illegal, the fact that slaves were put up and sold regardless of family, slave families were legally defined by mother and children excluding father - made it so that since they were constantly separated the black family was destroyed Highlight northward migration of blacks as another instance of destabilization of blacks, slavery was destabilizing, making the two parent family impossible and
