Feb. 11 History: Progressive Era Gathering momentum of a Progressive state in early 20 th century State extended power by “protecting those who needed protection” – arts, women, children Paternalist (protection) ideology Maternalist because most of the force behind campaigns came from women 1890-1920 – overwhelming majority of women could exercise more votes on ballot but were driving force of reform Women exercised power over public life even with ideology of domestic life Contradiction between ideas that regulated women and the time influence they had Ideology of domesticity was bound up with ideas of society Late 19 th century – civilization (where people sat in social scale) o Savagery --------- civilization (spectrum) o Gender was a decisive factor of where they fell on civilized spectrum o The most civilized society were ones with different roles of men and women o The most savage society were the ones where men and women worked side by side Civilization was intrinsically small men were rational, controlled their emotions, uniquely fit to protect civilization by being able to be in the army Civilization was the result of the beneficence of men – women only there to give birth and carry on that civilization Theodore Roosevelt – masculinity Some women accepted this others did not: ways to change their role 1
