NATURE of the Universe Review of Lesson 5 Astronomy - Telescopes • Light has both wave and particle properties. Individual quanta (photons) transmit discrete amounts of energy. Blue photons (shorter wavelength) have a higher energy than red photons (longer wavelength). • Individual atoms produce characteristic emission and absorption lines. This enables us to investigate the composition of distant objects like stars or galaxies. • Light from approaching objects is blue-shifted, light from receding objects is red-shifted. 2

Astronomy - Telescopes All modern telescopes used in astronomy are reflecting telescopes • Lenses show chromatic effects, i.e. light with different colors is not focused into the same spot (the lens acts like a prism!) • Lenses can only be support at the edges. • Thick lenses absorb some of the light. Disadvantages of refracting telescopes 10 The image shows the 80 cm entrance lens of the Potsdam “Great Refractor” being re-inserted after telescope refurbishment. Yerkes observatory (WI) houses the world’s largest refractor with a 102 cm lens - see http://astro.uchicago.edu/yerkes/
