MG371 Unit 6 Homework Chapter 11 1. Why do all organizations need to rely on groups and teams to achieve their goals and gain a competitive advantage? A group is defined as, “two or more people who interact with each other to accomplish certain goals or meet certain needs.” [Jon172] A team is defined as, “a group whose members work intensely with one another to achieve a specific common goal or objective.” [Jon172] All organizations need to rely on groups and teams to achieve their goals and gain a competitive advantage because groups can enhance performance, increase responsiveness to customers, increase innovation, and increase employees’ motivation and satisfaction. People working in groups are able to produce more or higher-quality outputs than would have been produced if each person had worked separately and all their individual inputs were combined. Being responsive to customers often requires the wide variety of skills and experience found in different departments, which can be combined in cross-functional teams. Managers can better encourage innovation by creating teams of diverse individuals who together have the knowledge relevant to a particular type of innovation, rather than relying on individuals working alone. Also, employees who work in teams are more likely to be more highly motivated and satisfied, and may experience lower levels of turnover. 4. Discuss the reasons why too much conformity can hurt groups and their organizations. a. Conformity, when in excess, can result in conforming to norms even when they are dysfunctional which will ultimately hurt the organization and their end goals. Excess conformity also affects the balance of conformity and deviance. Deviance can be important element to a group because it forces individual members to reflect on their actions and then change them if they find their actions are inappropriate. [Jon172]
