The meaning of Cyrus’ speech to his troops lies in its true purpose. Cyrus gathered his men before him in order to make clear why he was “not unwilling to be appointed to [the] command” (1.5.7) that the common council bestowed upon him. Here he outlined to the men why there is no doubt that they will be able to accomplish exactly their goals. This speech could play a major role in the success that Cyrus speaks of, for ruling an army does not simply involve military tactics but much housekeeping, including boosting the morale of the troops. With this speech, Cyrus was looking to improve his chances in battle. Much was accomplished with this dialogue. The main accomplishment was the successful instilling of hope and confidence in the troops. Cyrus speaks of the many reasons for inevitable Persian victory.
