What You Should Have Gotten Out of the Vascular Physiology Lecture or Learning Objectives for the Vascular Physiology Lecture Different types of blood vessels have different functions. 1. Describe the layers of blood vessels and the presence (or absence) of the layers in different vessel types. Understand that blood vessel structure relates to function and describe the examples given in class. Describe exchange at the capillaries (and that the ISF is the “middleman”). Blood flows because there is a higher pressure at one end of a vessel and a lower pressure at the other end. Resistance opposes flow. What is controlled to control resistance in the body is the diameter of arterioles. 2. Understand the reason blood flows through the cardiovascular system, include a definition of “down a pressure gradient” and a description of ∆P. Describe resistance. Understand the basic flow equation. Know the variables covered in class that determine resistance. Describe viscosity’s effect on resistance, what determines blood viscosity, and why in anemia blood flow can increase. Know what variable is controlled to control resistance in the body and why it has a big effect on resistance, and therefore, flow. Know which vessels increase or decrease their radius and affect flow through capillaries. Arteries are stretchable – when the ventricle contracts the arterial pressure rises; when the ventricle relaxes the arteries recoil, which maintains a pressure during diastole. 3. Describe arteries (include low resistance and what effect that low resistance has, and acting as “pressure reservoirs” - describe the arteries during systole and diastole and how a pressure is maintained during diastole). Review arterial systolic and diastolic pressures. Define pulse pressure. Know why the pulse rate is the HR. Describe mean arterial pressure, why it’s important, and know the equation that allows estimation of MAP. Arteriolar diameter controls blood flow through an organ.
