Abstract The purpose of this paper is to educate people on child abuse and the proper way to report suspected abuse according to the state of West Virginia’s policy. The number of cases of child abuse seen in the US have doubled. It’s important to know what to look for and how to report properly according to your state’s policy. Teachers and caregivers are trained thoroughly on how to report suspected abuse and have the numbers in their room if needed.

Child abuse is defined as physical maltreatment or sexual molestation of a child. In 2013 West Virginia had 36,884 referrals for child abuse, out of those only 18,965 reports were recommended for investigation. Out of those numbers 54% were neglected, 33% were physically abused and 5.2% were sexually abused. We have several mandated reporters, meaning that if we suspect abuse it is their obligation to take the right steps to report they are as followed, any medical, dental or mental health worker, EMS, Religious leader, Teacher, Social Service worker, Law officer, judge, or any person required to report based on their title. They must provide reasonable cause to suspect that child is be neglected or abused. One way to do this is document everything. Especially if you are daycare teacher or a teacher in public schools, you see these children every day.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
