WRT 102.37 Sarah Song 105852335 February 6, 2007 Response Paper: “College is a Waste of Time and Money” by Caroline Bird (The Norton Reader) As I read this excerpt from Bird’s book The Case Against College , the persistent thought that ran through my head was how strange it was that something written about colleges during the 1970’s is, for the most part, still true today. Many, if not most, high school graduates enter college in order to have a higher income later in life, or because they don’t know what else to do. College is a place generally everybody is expected to go to. What surprises me is that, according to Bird, the same was true 30 years ago, because I thought that this was phenomenon of the present. However, it may be that this started years ago, and now the effect has been multiplied, because an undergraduate college degree is no longer special. I’ve been told many times that whatever you major in during college doesn’t matter, as long as you get the grades. It seems to me that
