Sigmund Freud o ART AS SYMPTOM How does a work of art embody the three different modes of time, according to Freud? Does it do so in exactly the same way as a fantasy? Explain. Fantasy : “The activity of fantasy in the mind is linked up with some current impression, occasioned by some event in the present, which had the power to rouse an intense desire. From there it wanders back to the memory of an early experience, generally belonging to infancy, in which this wish was fulfilled. Then it creates for itself a situation which is to emerge in the future, representing the fulfillment of the wish– this is the day-dream or fantasy, which no carries in it traces both of the occasion which engendered it and of some past memory. So, past, present and future are threaded, as it were, on the string of the wish that runs through them all.” (p. 113) Work of Art: “Some actual experience which made a strong impression on the writer had stirred up a memory of an earlier experience, generally belonging to childhood, which then arouses a wish that finds a fulfillment in the work in question, and in which the elements of the recent event and the old memory should be discernible.”(p. 115) Art is different from fantasy in that it does not create a situation in the future, but embodies itself in the work, allowing for expression through a different medium than simply the thoughts of the person How do dreams distort the wishes whose fulfillment they represent? What is the parallel in regards to works of art? “dreams need to be understood as camouflaged wishes” (p. 110) The parallel in regards to art is “the artist’s unconscious is less repressed or hidden than others, Freud argues. Feeling a deep need to express unconscious thoughts and emotions, artists create works that, like dreams, are really the fulfillment of concealed wishes.” Dreams are better than daydreams, they are the windows into the unconscious and express our desires Does Frued’s theory provide a plausible account of popular fiction? Can Freud’s analysis of popular literature be extended to all literary works? If so, how? If not, what does this say about his theory? “Freud points to popular fiction– with its unflinching heroes and adorning heroines– as an example. Such works express the writer’s fantasies of invulnerability and sexual potency. And the evident pleasure readers derive from these works attests that these fantasies are not peculiar to the writer.” (p. 110) Do you agree with Freud that the artist is a special sort of a person, with a different relationship to her unconscious from that most people develop and maintain?
