Daniel Bang Assignment 6 A38965360 Chapter 21 discusses the main tipping points concerning the Earth’s climate. Some of these include the collapse of the Gulf Stream, the fall of the Amazon Rain Forests and last but not least, the release of gas hydrates from our seabeds. If the Gulf Stream collapses, half the biological productivity in the north Atlantic Ocean will be slashed and oceanic productivity will fall over 20%. Increases in carbon levels will cause Amazonian rainfall to reduce dramatically with 20 percent of this decline attributable to closed stomata. Chapter 22 shows Flannery describing how our civilization is built on two foundations: our ability to sustain ourselves through food sustenance and our ability to live in groups large enough to support great institutions. Flannery poses the question of whether or not climate change could threaten the resources required by cities to survive. According to Flannery, our civilization is in dire danger.
