Note from the SSI Management Team The State of Sustainability Initiatives (SSI) project is facilitated by the Sustainable Commodity Initiative and has been directly managed by the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD), the Finance Alliance for Sustainable Trade, Environment and Trade in a World of Interdependence (ENTWINED), and the Sustainable Trade Initiative (IDH). The SSI project is motivated by recognition of the need for improved information exchange among stakeholders in voluntary sustainability initiatives and among voluntary sustainability standards themselves. The objective of the SSI project is to stimulate regular reporting on the state of play across voluntary sustainability standards, offering a framework for understanding the characteristics, important issues and market trends for select sustainability initiatives and standards operating in global markets. It is hoped that the Review can serve as a valuable tool for learning and strategic decision making between the private sector and the sustainability initiatives themselves.
