Chromatographic Determination of Analgesics Chem 102 Abstract In this lab the components of analgesics were determined by the use of chromatography. A spot of a known and an unknown analgesic (painkiller) were spotted onto a tlc silica gel sheet and placed in a solvent in which the sheet was allowed to develop. After examining the developed sheet under UV light, spraying the sheet with an aqueous detector solution, and comparing the appearance of the sheet with colleagues, the unknown analgesic was determined to contain caffeine and ASA and have a R f value of 0.814. The R f values of the students in the laboratory, that were also given the same unknown analgesic (#1), were within practical range of each other and the above The R f value.
