Astronomy 135: Archaeoastronomy Problem Set 4 Due at the beginning of class, Feb. 14 Reading assignment: Krupp, Ch. 9, “The Space We Enclose”, pp. 214-230 Ruggles, “Archaeoastronomy in Europe,” Spence, “Ancient Egyptian Chronology and the Astronomical Orientation of the Pyramids” Download these last two from classesv2.yale.edu in the “resources” section 1) Noticing a star’s heliacal rising fixes a date in the sidereal year, rather than in the tropical year. a) What is the difference between these two years? b) How long does it take the sidereal year and the tropical year to get out of sync by 1 day? c) Which of these years do most people want to keep their calendars by? Why? 2) a) The first new moon of 2008 was on January 8. Using an alternating cycle of “full” (30 days) and “hollow” (29 days) months, write down a table of the dates of the first 6 new and full moons of 2008. (Don’t look this up, count out the days. A calendar may be helpful—remember that February has 29 days this year.) b) Easter always falls on the Sunday after the first full moon after the equinox. The full moon before Easter is called the “Paschal” moon. Based on your table, what is the date of the Paschal moon in 2008? c) What is the next year that you can be sure that the Paschal moon will fall on this date in the Gregorian
