Ecology 182 Lab Section 17 Lab Performed On 1-29-08 Gene Pool Currents: Guppy Lab By: Natalie Nguyen, Jackie L'Heureux, David Stanfield and Chrissy Wanduloski Research Question: In the upper west stream, the male guppies are brighter than anywhere else in the surrounding environment. Why are male guppies brighter in this part of the river? Hypothesis: The predatory fish Rivulus preys on male guppies with a smaller spot brightness value; males with higher spot brightness values survive and reproduce more in the Upper West Stream due to the presence of the Rivulus fish. Tabular Data: Random Sampling of Male Guppies in Upper West Stream Spot Brightness # of Male Guppies 14.0 2 15.0 3 16.0 3 17.0 3 18.0 3 19.0 6 Random Sampling of Male Guppies in Upper East Stream Spot Brightness # of Male Guppies 11.0 2 13.0 1 14.0 2 15.0 6 16.0 6 17.0 1 18.0 2 - 1 -
