Sebastian Morales ENC1101 – Fowler 12/02/2015 Technology for The Better Technology has improved tremendously since the beginning of time. Whether it is with the invention of the wheel hundreds of years ago or the invention of the iPhone in today’s society; humans have always had some sort of relationship with technology. My claim is that we should be encouraged by the new relationships that we have developed with our current technologies, and with new ones that are to come. Overall, technology enhances our intellectual potential, it has improved our communication abilities, and it creates new jobs, allowing us to do things that we can not even imagine as of yet. As technology advances, jobs are being created allowing us to do things that were never thought of before. Some people believe that technology advancements are hurting our society by taking away our jobs. Kevin Kelly stated that, “two hundred years ago, 70 percent of American workers lived on the farm. Today automation has eliminated all but 1 percent of their jobs, replacing them (and their work animals) with machines” (299). This shows how technology takes away jobs. However, they take these jobs away because machines can do the jobs so much better. Kevin Kelly states that, “humans can weave cotton cloth with great effort but automated looms make perfect cloth, by the mile, for a few cents” (306). Machines replace humans in certain jobs because they do the task more efficiently and for cheap. We do not have to worry about technology taking jobs away though because they are also constantly creating new ones. The farmers who lost their jobs because of machines got jobs in another field. Kevin Kelly stated that, “the displace workers did not sit idle. Instead, automation created hundreds of millions of
jobs in entirely new fields. Those who once farmed were now manning the legions of factories that churned out farm equipment, cars, and other industrial products” (300). These advancements in technology are also allow us to do things that we would have never imagined before. A
