Devan Hinskey 01/26/2014 Intro. to Anthropology Reflecting on Eating Christmas When I read Richard Borshay Lee’s article Eating Christmas in the Kalahari , I learned that even when you have done fieldwork studying an indigenous people for a considerable amount of time, you think you know everything there is to know about them. Then suddenly, you learn something new about the group of your study the hard way unexpectedly. Mr. Lee certainly learned something new like this in his recollection of his experiences with the !Kung Bushmen of southern Tswana in Africa during the Christmas season. Mr. Lee hears of the tribe’s tradition of slaughtering an ox for a fabulous feast and decides to buy the biggest cow he can buy as a gift for the Bushmen’s feast. However, when he reveals the present to them, they claim that the ox is just ‘an old bag of bones’ and continually scold him, even when he protests otherwise. After the enormous feast on Christmas Day, Mr. Lee soon finds out that the !Kung do not approve of boastfulness of catching a meaty animal, thus the reason for
