September 25, 2007 Assignment #1 -September 20, 2007, page A23, “Taxing the Hand That Feeds Us”, Ramesh Ponnuru Claim: The author is claiming that there is no reason to change the current tax rates on middle-class families because they are already compatible with healthy long-term growth. If they are to lower taxes then it is putting a bigger burden on the future generation of taxpayers to pay back tax-cuts made to our parents. The author acknowledges that tax cuts made to middle-class families will help parents economically but it is hypocritical because Republicans claim to have “family values” but by taking advantage of these tax cuts they are just hurting their children’s future. Evidence: Ramesh Ponnuru discusses tax plans of the four Republican Presidential Candidates for 2008. He states that Romney and Giuliani both have plans to keep taxes low and even goes on to say that Romney’s proposal would make the return on middle- class savings tax free. The author then discusses that Mike Huckabee wants a national sales tax and Sam Brownback wants a flat tax. He makes it clear that either proposal
