Levi 1 Rachel Levi RHE 309S Lacey Donohue October 25, 2007 RR #8: “God and Satan in Bentonville” Conclusion: Wal-Mart believes they are following ethical business standards because although their wages paid to employees are significantly low, their merchandise is extremely cheap and they cater to the needs of the lower-American class, which most stores do not. Wal-Mart justifies their low wages by arguing that their employees gain instant benefits when joining the Wal-Mart team and successfully convinces their employees to believe this. Unfortunately, these fundamental beliefs that Wal-Mart holds are not compatible to the present-day living standards and do not fulfill their employees living needs. Reasons: 1. A benefit for Wal-Mart employees is being able to buy company shares straight from their paychecks without paying a commission. However, after talking to many employees of Wal-Mart, journalist Dan Baum finds that the majority of employees do not hold a significant amount of shares that alter their life styles in a helpful way. 2. “Wal-Mart holds many of its employees to a 28-hour workweek, so it does not have to pay them benefits that by law go to its full-time workers.” This shows how although Wal-Mart’s primary goal is to provide merchandise to the lower class at an affordable cost, they are not looking out for the well-being of their own
