Part above the soil- Shoot System A. Plant growth : 2 regions, root system and shoot system. Whole plant doesn't grow, just special regions. It extends up through the shoots and down through the roots. 1. Meristem cells (like human stem cells): undifferentiated embryonic cells (not specialized), 2 types a. Apical meristem - found at both ends of plants (roots and shoots) every single cell in this plant comes from these regions* considered the "primary growth", throughout the life of plant, increases height 1) Depending on where the location is, the cells above it signal …. 2) Plants never really stop growing 3) Root apical meristem- it is at the base of the root where the growth occurs. 4) Shoot apical meristem- it is at the top of the root. Each cell looks identical to each other; these become the leaves, etc… b. Lateral meristem - ring-like structure in dicots and conifers. It is considered part of the secondary growth systems; 1) "Secondary growth", later in life, responsible for thickening of branches and trunks. 2) In the rainforests you don’t find the lateral meristem because there is no seasonality (what causes the rings) B. Plant Tissue Systems : 1. Dermal Tissue System : outside covering (skin). Protects from water loss and keep infections out. a. Epidermis (skin) covers outside of plant, thin-walled cells with waxy cuticle only in shoot system 1) Ex. Root hairs and leaf hairs. (each hair is a cell) 2) 2 guard cells make up the stomata b. Periderm - can replace the epidermis in older woody, stems, branches, trunks 1) Prevents water loss and bocks out parasites 2) Cork cells : think-walled cells, waterproof and from the bark c. Prevents water lose and infection
