III. 1453: Ottomans conquered Constantinople ended Byzantine Empire. IV. Ottoman Turks were multi-national, multi-religious a. Arabs, Africans, Europeans. b. 1516 – 1517: Took over Arab land in the south. V. 16 th 2. Describe the Millet system, it’s historical context and its function in the Ottoman Empire. 1. Millet (means “nation” in Turkish) a. Placed each minority in their own region with self-ruling government. b. Paid taxes to Ottomans Empire to help the poor. c. Based on self-rule and self-autonomy. d. Wore specific clothes, could not own firearms, nor animals bigger than a Muslim’s. e. Problem with Millet: They were never assimilated into Ottoman society.
