Topic 10 1. Discuss the events in Dayr Yasin, reasons and results. EVENTS: I. April 9, 1948: several Jewish armed factions (Irgun & Stern) seized and occupied the Arab town Dayr Yasin. a. Brutal attack where young women and children were killed, women were believed to be raped. REASONS: II. Political project, not based on hate. Were trying to scare Arabs to leave. RESULTS: III. Dayr Yasin became an ideological bait in the propaganda war between Israel and Arab states. a. Irgun & Stern scared 300,000 Arabs who left out of fear. 2. Briefly discuss the 1967 war, its reasons and results. 3. Analyze the reasons for the PLO/Israeli peace talks in the early 1990’s. Pay attention to the reasons for each side to begin the talks. I. PLO reasons for peace talks a. 1991 Persian Gulf War alienated them because they stood with Sadaam. b. Economic isolation in the region. c. Political results of the Intifada. i. Intifadda was spontaneous, PLO losing leadership of Palestinians.
