ME 352-A Lab 5: Static and Dynamic Balancing of Rotor Part A: Static Balancing Concept : When rotor is statically balanced, then the center of mass lies on the axis of rotation A Crosscheck : Rotate the shaft to any angular position and leave it. If it is statically balanced then the shaft will retain its position. Procedure: a) You are provided with 4 different masses(in from of bars) and thus “the s h aft + 4 masses” constitutes your system b) As of now you assume that the center of mass of the bars is at equidistant from the axis of rotation. c) d) Orient the masses on the shaft in such a way that : a. center of mass = ∑? 𝑖 𝒓 𝒊 = 𝟎 e) For that randomly orient masses ? 1 and ? 2 (at 𝜃 1 𝑎?𝑑 𝜃 2 ) and then analytically solve for getting orientation of ? 3 and ? 4 (i.e. 𝜃 3 𝑎?𝑑 𝜃 4 ) f) Manually orient m3 and m4 at calculated angles 𝜃 3 𝑎?𝑑 𝜃 4 and then see if there is unbalance (there will be most probably).

### What students are saying

• As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

Kiran Temple University Fox School of Business ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• I cannot even describe how much Course Hero helped me this summer. It’s truly become something I can always rely on and help me. In the end, I was not only able to survive summer classes, but I was able to thrive thanks to Course Hero.

Dana University of Pennsylvania ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
