1 RSRU - 1000 - 017 Faith and Critical Reason, Fall 2007 Prof. Miller Review for Exam on Section III: The Spirit In preparation for the exam, be ready to answer questions similar to the following: - The divine Spirit (Air) is also called Fire and Water - what do these names imply about the relationship between the Spirit and the universe? The divine spirit is also called fire and water which gives the  modern meaning of breath, life, force soul and mind in the  universe today. These things are all invisible, intangible,  realities. It shows dualism and the radical distinction between  matter and mind. It is not saying the Spirit is the Universe.  Existence of me is bound up with elements but elements are not  bound up in me. The Spirit is an element intrinsic to creation. Fire and water are elements and elements are the fundamental  substance of the universe, it shows that the Spirit is the basic  substance of the universe.  - What does the holy Spirit have to do with the conception of Jesus, and why is this significant? Jesus’ public life depends on this Spirit and Jesus  distinguishes this spirit from Himself and the father. Spirit is  source of charisma, with most significant gift being agape. The  spirit is the force communicated in a physical way and the  Spirit actualizes our human nature. The spirit is intrinsic to  creation. The Spirit is intrinsic to the conception of Jesus and  the Conception of Jesus is the eternal begetting of the son from  the father through the Spirit; this is significant in explaining  what the Spirit is. The son eternally receives infinite life  from God and the Spirit is intrinsic to the eternal begetting of  the son and this makes the Spirit eternal too.  - Give a basic summary of what the Cappadocians say about divine Trinity. The cappadocians say that the Spirit gives divine life and  actualizes us as sons and daughters and if the spirit gives  divine life, then the spirit must be divine. - What does Basil mean by “conjoined separation and separated conjunction”? Conjoined Separation and Separated Conjunction refer to the  three persons of the trinity being equal and distinct. EX) a  rainbow has no separation line between colors but at the same  time the colors are distinct. One nature can exist in different  ways; each one is fullness of divinity because that’s what it  means to be equal even though they have this “fullness” in

different ways.   - What does Gregory of Nyssa identify as “a customary abuse of language”? Why is this significant for understanding divine Trinity? Gregory of Nyssa identifies Alabius’s claim that there are 3
