BUZZ KILL Etowah County exceeds the national average of 8% for excessive drinking in 18+ by 4% (ADPH, 2016). 20.3% of students in grades 6 through 12 (1 in 5 teens) had consumed alcohol in the past month; Rates for 6 through grade 9 for drinking exceeds the national average by nearly 4% (Annual Pride Survey, 2014).

100% PROOF TWO FINDINGS RELATED TO ALCOHOL MISUSE IN ETOWAH COUNTY The high drop out rate of Alabamians is 4% over the national average of 18.1%, decreases the chance that individuals will be able to make well educated, informed decisions (ADMH, 2016). Overall crime in Etowah County was 238.66, which is a whopping 138.66% higher than the national average. (Homefacts, 2016). 36% offenders were drinking at the time of their conviction. 40% of state prisoners convicted of violent crimes were under the influence of alcohol at the time of their offense − the more violent the crime, the greater the likelihood that alcohol was involved (2016).

A SHOT OF INFORMATION INCREASED MISUSE OF ALCOHOL IN ETOWAH From 2005 to 2012, the change in female heavy drinking increased 0.5 percentage points (IHME, 2015) The change from 2002 to 2012 for females was an increase of 2.1 percentage points for binge drinking (IHME, 2015).

HEALTH DEPARTMENT NURSE EDUCATOR ROLE The community health nurse will provide informatics, resources and motivation for safe behavior while promoting lifestyle adjustments in regards to alcohol misuse. This will aid in accomplishing the objective that is to decrease the prevalence of dangerous consumption of alcohol in Etowah County. Through primary prevention, with emphasis on the 12-17 aged population at risk for alcohol misuse, the nurse educator will be able to reach more individuals in an attempt to avoid abuse before it occurs.
