Government should lay the foundation for ethical conduct, such as in licenses, but should have a lesser involvement in the actual running of those businesses. Licenses authorize operations to perform under specified standards presuming it will operate honestly and demonstrate responsibility for its undertakings (Zaharia, 2015). Despite the rules laid out by a license, I believe that businesses naturally want to succeed and want to maintain an ethical standing to protect the business. Executives realize there is a positive long-run advantage in standing for ethics for the perception of society and to uphold a social responsibility in fear of endangering their reputations (Zaharia, 2015). Even in removing accountability businesses that do not act in an ethical manner do not gain new business. Society’s value of the business is a significant component to the longevity of the business therefore, it becomes essential for ethics to be a part of how they do business (Zaharia, 2015).
