BONE PAIN CASE STUDY Bio201 Hybrid Class(Sat.) Fall 2008 1. Why isn’t Jamie allowed unlimited use of aspirin for pain? The reason the doctor said that he wants the boy to feel some pain has to do with the bodies response to pain. When there is something out of the ordinary or is affecting the body in a ill conditioned manner then the body sends “pain” signals via the Nervous System to the brain. The brain in turn releases the correct hormone, chemical, starts the reaction necessary, etc to cure what seems to be the ailment. If the body is “dormant” due to artificial drugs ingested to the body then the natural “security system” will not alarm the brain to feel pain. If the pain is blocked then we would not know if the ailment ( severs disease in this case) has been cured. 2. Why does Jamie’s pain subside after a period of inactivity? The disease that the Doctor later diagnosed the boy is Sever disease. This disease is sometimes called calcaneal apophysitis. This affects the calcaneus which is located by the bottom of the heel. This is caused by constant pressure/usage of this part if the body in growing children that are active. The body stopped sending pain signals because the cause of the disease seized. In the process of repairing the damage due to inactivity there was no need for
