You are a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) employed as a contact employee in a busy primary care practice for 2 years. The providers in the group include one physician, who is also the owner of the practice, and two other nurse practitioners. The owner of the practice recently made comments about the need to produce more revenue. You relate with his concerns and feel that you have several strategies that could be helpful. Your contract is up for renewal in 3 months. You are highly satisfied with your job and want to stay in the group. You see 20 patients per day on average, and take call every third weekend. Discussion Question: What negotiation strategies should you use to propose a contract renewal? Use logical reasoning and provide evidence based rationales for your decisions. Keep in mind that your negotiation terms and conditions must be within the legal scope of practice for an ANP. Nurse practitioners (NPs) are employed in a various clinical settings providing care to a variety of patients (i.e., chronic, acute, emergency, and surgical patients) (Mennella, 2016). NPs are employed in a variety of settings, such as an outpatient and private practice. Within outpatient settings and private practice, NPs fulfill the increasing necessity to provide timely and cost effective care to an increasingly number of patients (Mennella, 2016). As a contract Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) employed in a provider group with a physician and two other FNPs, there is currently a need to increase revenue amongst the providers. In reviewing negotiation strategies with my contract renewal, as one suggestion I would recommend the physician transition me from being a contract employee to a full time NP. In my opinion I believe begin a full time employee, I would be able to provide care to more patients in the clinical setting. Mennella suggest Medicare, third party vendors, and several profitable managed care organizations reimburse for services provided by NPs (2016). If my employment as a full time NP, I think that increases my patient load would definitely generate additional revenue for the practice. An agreement must be reached regarding actual facilities that are to be provided, access to facilities, use of facilities such as in the event that the nurse practitioner might want to implement an evening community clinic in addition to creating weekend clinic as well. If evening and weekend clinics are created than the NP should generate parameters of general liability insurance safety provisions for the employer, employee, and clients (Chamberlain College of Nursing, 2017). As means to generate additional revenue for the private practice, the NP should definitely be aware that their daily work and contributions to the clinical practice assist with generating revenue assuming that they are working within their scope of practice. Overall, I think that adding evening and weekend clinic and transitioning me from contract to a standard employee would definitely assist with increase the revenue of the practice.
