Unformatted text preview: Psych 101 Contact Info: Office hours: in room 110 B of psych building (all contact info is found on the syllabus at www.angel.msu.edu ) Exams and Grades Three in class exams (best two of three) Mandatory final exam There is a grading sheet in the syllabus NO MAKEUP EXAMS, you will get a zero, but you can drop lowest grade. Each exam is 62 question multiple choice, making each exam worth 31 percent. Last 7 percent is based on Volunteering for a psychological experiment, you must do 14 credits worth for the last 7 percent. Extra credit option, 5 percent- Continue with the experiment for 5 more credits and get an xtra 5 percent. j Notes Psychology- The scientific study of mind and behavior. Named after the goddess Psyche, who like all humans always wondered and craved for what she didnt know. The symbol of Psyche is the butterfly, which is supposed to emphasize metamorphosis in all humans. There is a capacity in all human beings to become better individuals. Logos, the second part of the word psychology, means the transcendence to something greater, literally means the speech of the soul. Perspectives in Contemporary Psychology A lot depends on your perspectivefor example: take a look at a cylinder. If you look at it from the top, it looks like a circle, from the side, its a rectangle, and if you look at it as a whole, it becomes the entire 3 dimensional object. Early Perspectives on Psychology Functionalism- How does the mind help us adapt to our environment? Structuralism- By introspection (Structure of the Mind), can we discover the parts of the mind? Both of these perspectives are outdated in the modern world. As a student of psychology, you can never ask Which perspective is right? Between the different perspectives. Wilhelm Wundt- First person to develop the study of psychology in a formal laboratory. Contemporary Approaches to Psychology Psychoanalytic Perspective- Focuses on the unconscious aspects of the mind and psychosexual development. (Sigmund Freud) Behaviorism- Only interested in observable behavior. Does not include the mind in the psychoanalytical process. John Watson = the father of behaviorism. B.F. Skinner- Took over for John Watson on the study of behaviorism. Humanism- Created to oppose Behaviorism. Psychology should improve human welfare. Disavows the study of lower animals. Carl Rogers- Father of Humanism. Cognitive Psychology- The human being is an information processor. How do we perceive and organize the sense data of our world? How do we make sense of our world?
