Course Syllabus Jump to Today HIST 1301, U.S. History to 1877 Instructor: Frank DeLaO, PhD. Summer II 2017, Online Office: 156 MHAB / 685-6812/ FAX 685-6847 e-mail: [email protected] Office Hours: By appointment only Participation Students MUST actively participate by completing an academic assignment required by the instructor by the official census date. Students who do not actively participate in an academically-related activity will be reported as never attended and dropped from the course. This assignment will be available beginning 8:00am on Thursday July 13th and needs to be completed by Wednesday July 19th by 5:00pm. Course Description This course is a survey of United States history from the arrival of Europeans in the 15th century to Reconstruction in 1877. The purpose is to help students understand the social, cultural, economic and political history of the United States during this time period. Although we will start at the end of the 15th century, most of the focus for this class will be on the people and events of the 19th century. The study of history centers on three broad goals - the development of: • a sense of chronology (expressed as chronological order) • a sense of significance (what makes one event or trend more important than another) • a sense of change in social institutions over time TEXTS Goldfield, David. Student Learning Outcomes After successfully completing this course, the student should be able to do the following: SLO 1: discuss U.S. History from the 1492-Reconstruction. SLO 2 : think critically about major topics in American History, and how they relate to the United States today. SLO 3: read and summarize, or be able to react to essays relating to this period in U.S. history. SLO 4: show and understanding by discussion, written form, or other measures of examination how this country developed its institutions, values, mores, lifestyles, religions, and social character. STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES AND CLASS POLICIES You must be able to read, and do all assignments on your own. You are always welcome to ask questions concerning the material. Also, the student should make sure they read the syllabus carefully so as to familiarize himself/herself with the due dates and the reading assignments. You are expected to be able to read, write and understand standard English because the course is based on extensive amounts of material given in posted lectures and assigned readings. All exams will be short answer, identification, or essay format. An essay should include as much specific information as time allows, but should not be just a dump of facts. Good writing ties facts together into an analysis, synthesis, and evaluation of a topic.
