Congestive Heart Failure NURS 6501 August 6, 2017 Dr. Heider
Alterations of Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) Build up of excess fluid in lungs and peripheral tissue (Hammer & McPhee, 2014) Left or Right ventricular remodeling (Huether & McCance, 2017) Left or Right ventricular failure Increased afterload and increased preload Inflamed liver and spleen (hepatosplenomegaly) and peripheral edema
Pathophysiology of the Alterations As the lungs build up with fluid the lungs can no longer have adequate gas exchange leading to dyspnea (Colucci & Dunlay, 2017) Exercise intolerance due to increased workload of the heart Hypertension due to increased peripheral vascular resistance (Huether & McCance, 2017) Increased afterload leads to increased workload for the ventricle that causes ventricular remodeling (Huether & McCance, 2017) Decrease return blood flow to heart causing fluid build up in peripheral tissue, organs, and decreased kidney function (American Heart Association, 2017)
Alterations produced pathophysiological changes in two body systems Left side heart failure can cause-
