Topic 3 DQ#1 What is the importance of cultural competency in nursing? Support you answer. In order for nurses to be able to address the future healthcare needs of our multicultural population as well as limit health disparities and inequalities it is important for healthcare workers to not only be aware of the different cultures, but it is important that they become culturally competent. In order to become culturally competent the healthcare provider must possess many parts to them. They must possess culturally competent knowledge, skills, respect, be open-minded and genuinely caring about diversity ( NRS-429V Lecture 3). In the United States the minority population is increasing. With this increasing population comes many different cultures. Within these different cultures comes a multitude of different ideas, beliefs, rituals, values and understanding of health. When there is a lag in understanding of the different cultures and all there parts, that minority group will experience health disparities. Providing patient-centered care and quality healthcare goes along with delivering culturally competent care. When delivering this type of care healthcare, professionals will be able to pinpoint and treat diseases that is culturally expectable by the patient leading to a healthier future of that minority group (Edelman, Kudzma, & Mandal, 2014).
