Is there a cure?Slide#1What is Diabetes Mellitus (DM)?Diabetes can be described as a chronic disease characterized by high levels of sugar (glucose) in the bloodstream. When we eat food the body breaks it down into glucose so that the body can use this for energy. In order for our body to use this glucose the pancreas must release insulin that acts as a key for the glucose to enter out vital organs such as our heart, brain and muscle (Diabetes Research Institute Foundation, 2016).DM happens when the pancreas:Does not produce insulinDoes not make enough insulin Produces insulin but the body is resistant to this insulin(Diabetes Research Institute Foundation, 2016)Speaker notes: Our bodies need glucose to function and live. With a properly functioning system we consume food that converts it to glucose or “energy” that our body uses. The more energy we need the more food we need to support the proper function of our vital organs. When the system does not work the sugar stays in our bloodstream never making it to the vital organs. This high levels of sugar in the blood stream cause damage to the blood vessels that lead to damage to vital organs such as our eyes which results in poor vision.
