Chris Choi100YearsWar3/1/17Homework #10 Ancient African Culture and Societies (read 227-233 in World History)1. What are the limitations on historians wishing to understand the full scope of African societies? The continent was very diverse, consisting of more than 3,000 tribes in the current state. Another limitation was that there was no written languages in the majority of Africa. Almost everything, from information to stories and myths, were passed down orally and relied on their memory. So if a tribe forgot information or if many of their people are killed, then the entire history of that tribe is at risking ofbeing removed since they had no written records to refer back to. As a result, historians had to rely on accounts written by outside sources, travelers and visitors from other countries not from Africa. However, these visitors mostly came in contact with the rich and powerful tribes, so their opinions were biased and skewed.
