Chapter 1 and 2 Introduction to Animal Science and Value of Animals to Mankind Animal-Mankind relationship precedes recorded history. Domestic animals serve the US in many ways. They are raised primarily for food but also contribute to our welfare in many other ways. Hunters-Gatherers-Farmers-Agriculture All people are dependent on agriculture for their existence. The more developed agriculture countries also have highest standards of living. Animal Science -the field of biology that includes the study of all aspects of domestic animals. Animal Science Specialties: o Animal Breeding (applied genetics) o Nutrition (feeding animals) o Physiology (mechanics of life) o Animal Health (diseases, parasites, and environmental factors) o Etholgy (animal behavior) o Meat Science (processing, distribution, and marketing of finished products) o Biotechnology (technological applications of modern biology, particularly molecular and cellular biology)
