Methods Thinking like a scientist The scientific process Next time 3 A happy worker is a productive one. Because two heads are better than one, groups make better decisions than individuals. Conflict in organizations is always highly disruptive. Leaders are born, not made. In general and for most people, money is the best motivator and satisfier. So you think you know OB? 4 People satisfied with one job tend to be satisfied with other jobs, too. People generally do not like jobs that are complex. People get bored easily, leading them to welcome organizational change. Specific goals make people nervous; people work best when they are asked to do their best. So you think you know OB? 5 Core human values are very different across cultures. Employees tend to steal when they are unfairly treated. The team concept is not consistent with American values. The best predictor of stress is a persons dispositional outlook. So you think you know OB? 6 How did you do? Most people score around 50%, which is pretty much just chance! Wouldnt it be good to know these things if youre trying to manage people? 7 Organizational Behavior is: A field of study devoted to understanding, explaining, and ultimately improving the attitudes and behaviors of individuals and groups in organizations. Colquitt, LePine, & Wesson, p. 7 A field of study that investigates the impact that individuals, groups, and structure have on behavior within organizations, in order to improve an organizations effectiveness. Robbins & Judge, p. 10-11 What is OB? 8 Organizational behavior is not just common sense the scientific study of attitudes and behavior the intersection of theory, research, & practice Whenever Ive taken risks, its been after satisfying myself that the research and the market studies supported my instincts.
