Surname1 The Hollywood Blacklist What It Was The Hollywood blacklist was a list of Hollywood entertainment workers denied employment for purported communist ties. The list came into being on November 25, 1947 (Humphries 78). It included screenwriters, musicians, actors, film directors, and producers. In the early 1940s, the House Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC) commenced an investigation into professionals they thought were responsible or partakers of placing dissident messages in Hollywood films. The investigation was carried out as a result of a growing concern that communists in the United States film industry were capable of placing negative images in movies that would be distributed internationally. How It Came About Extensive media coverage of investigations by HUAC led to the “infamous” Hollywood Ten, a group of ten media personalities who refused to testify and to tell the committee whether or not they were members of the Communist Party.
