When these mutants were tested on minimal medium to which one of the four compounds (indole glycerol phosphate, indole, anthranilic acid and tryptophan) had been added, the results in the following table were obtained. Failure to grow in the presence of the compound is indicated by and growth is indicated by +. A single nucleotide addition and a single nucleotide deletion approximately 15 bases apart in a strand of DNA cause a protein to change in sequence from Lys-Ser-Pro-Ser-Leu-Asn-Ala-Ala-Lys to Lys- Val-His-His-Leu- Met-Ala-Ala-Lys
