Person- centered therapists believe empathy is critical in producing positive change in the client. Successful therapy is based on a trusting relationship between therapist and client in which the therapist does not sympathize with the client but understands his motivations. Based on research, it was hypothesized that empathy and trust would aid the client in reaching the goals set and changing personality. Discuss unconditional positive regard in the counseling process; make sure to distinguish between acceptance and approval.
