Physics 1AL UNITS & MEASUREMENT Fall 2008 1 Introduction The purpose of this lab is to familiarize you with some of the standard units and measurements used by scientists. You will measure the length and mass of some objects, then use those measurements to calculate area, volume and density. You will also measure the time it takes for a pendulum to swing and determine the accuracy and precision of your measurements. Finally, you will practice using estimation in order to answer questions. Before you start, read the sections of your textbook (Ch 1.4 – 1.6) that covers uncertainty, measurements, significant figures, conversions, and estimation. You should use the information presented in the text book to answer the lab questions. You will need a quad ruled notebook with carbons. For all subsequent labs you should answer the pre-lab questions in this notebook BEFORE coming to lab. As this is the first lab, you may answer them in the lab itself. Next week your TA will collect the original (top) copy of your prelab questions as you enter the lab. The other (carbon) copy you keep to help you with the lab itself. Your lab must be written in this notebook. ALL your notes should be made directly into the book. Record your data neatly, make your graphs, and work out the quantities needed in the lab. These should be legible and complete, so that at a later date you can recreate and understand what you did in the lab. You do not need to copy text from the lab manual. _____________________________________________________________________________ _ Pre-lab questions: (These are usually required to be done before you come to lab and turned in for grading. For the first week only, you will not have to turn in pre-lab questions at the beginning of lab.) A. Length In this activity you will make length measurements of different objects to help you become familiar with units of length. You will also measure some objects using metric units for length (meter & centimeter) and compare them to the more familiar English units (foot & inch).
