SOCI-142 MIDTERM 1. In lectures and video, the origins of Black protest and the Civil Rights Movement were discussed. Write an essay in which you (a) define and note ingredients of race/ethnic consciousness (b) discuss Davies’ theory of rising expectations and the conditions just prior to the Civil Rights Movement (i.e., World War II, 1954 Supreme Court decision), and (c) discuss the way in which the Black rank and file were able to exert power and desegregate the busses in the Montgomery bus boycott (lecture & video) I. Define and note ingredients of race/ethnic consciousness a) Self hatred and anger have been taken outside the system i. remove feeling of worthlessness, reject prejudice, and think that they are powerful ii. e.g. “black is beautiful” iii. from self-hatred to system blame, believing that things have to change b) Paternalistic to competitive race relations i. Color bar disappears ii. Agricultural economy to urbanization/industrialization iii. System centered on efficiency iv. Not efficient to keep one race subordinate v. 1870-1939 Restrictive vi. 1940-present open/fluid competitive race relations c) Nullifying the 15th amendment i. Blacks are citizens and have the right to vote ii. White South Æ defacto: 1. Informal restrictions put place to prevent black votes a. Vote tax, literacy test, grandparent clause, education test d) Jim Crow Laws i. Segregation of races in public facilities: schools, seminary, restrooms, restaurants, buses, drinking fountains ii. 1986 “Separate but equal”—established by Plessy v. Ferguson Supreme Court, giving support to Jim Crow laws. e) Biological racism i. Organized set of beliefs about the inferiority of African Americans: 1880-1900s ii. System set of rationalization: Darwin’s Theory of Evolution iii. Culture is a product of biological evolution development

iv. Races are offshoots of different stages of evolution—Negro is clearly below whites/ a distinct specie v. Lower race not capable of carrying the culture of a higher race vi. Mixed racial sex would rapidly destroy white culture, great achievements can’t be maintained. vii. Separation required to prevent cultural decline viii. A mixed child is biologically in between f) Terrorism i. KKK-intimidation, murder, etc ii. South police and independent groups 1. Lynching very common- 3500 blacks were lynched 2. Mob lynching very common, often no one is guilty 3. Beating, verbal abuse, fire, shotguns at windows, public humiliation, etc 4. Terrorist tactics to maintain white supremacy 5. Richard Wright’s Black Boy captures this moment a. 1930s Old south with Restricted system II. Discuss Davies’ theory of rising expectations and the conditions just prior to the Civil Rights Movement (i.e., World War II, 1954 Supreme Court decision) a) James Davies Theory: i. Revolutions, protest, and revolts do not come randomly—has pre-conditions ii. Questioned the structured conditions for a collective protest b) Rising expectations theory i. When there is no hope for the future, there is no protest
