7. Discuss the relationship between inner city stress troubled (neighborhoods) and hypertension among African Americans. Give a detailed summary of the Harburg study on race and hypertension. (Lecture) a) Neighborhood disadvantage is associated with mental and physical health. i. Blocks, graffiti…affect physical health. Social factors connected to physical health. ii. Daily hostility, hypertensive, Emotional distress. iii. People’s body pay price. Perceive threats Trigger primitive biological “fight or flight” response that Human share with other mammals. iv. Ghetto neighborhood may arouse the “fight or flight” intension frequently and intentionally. But as people in the society you can’t just leave. v. The intension prepares you for physical running/fighting. Blood pressure rise, digestive system shut down, hormones released, increase heart/respiratory rate… vi. Daily threatening may be exhaustive and result in pressure collapse. Bad dreams, listless hopelessness. vii. Indirect anxiety and pressure. b) Hill Ross & Angel JHSB theory—Neighborhood disorder. i. Environment that residence perceive as threatening. ii.
