BLD 213 Midterm Objectives Lab 1 1. OSHA is to provide a safe work environment for all employees. Also it authorizes on-site inspections to determine if the employer is following OSHA’s guidelines. 2. Classification of Fires a. Class A - Ordinary combustible solid (paper, wood, plastic, and fabric) b. Class B – Flammable liquids/gases and petroleum products c. Class C – Energized electrical equipment d. Class D – Combustible/reactive metals (magnesium, sodium, and potassium Fire Extinguisher Class A – pressured water and multipurpose dry chemical Class B and C – multipurpose dry chemical and carbon dioxide Class D – Fire-fighter. 3. There is no eating or drinking in the lab. All food must be stored in a place that does not share a frig with chemicals, samples, or lab supplies. No smoking. No mouth pipetting. 4. Hazard labels a. Red – Flammable b. Blue – Health hazard c. Yellow – Chemical Reactive or unstable d. White – Special Information (toxic, cancer hazard) e. Green – Non-flammable gas f. Black – Poison/ corrosive

g. Orange – Biohazard/ explosive h. Dimaonds – have a ring of hazard rating 0-4. 5. Supplies needed for a venipuncture a. Gloves, tourniquet, vacuum blood tubes, Syringe, needle, alcohol wipe, cotton balls, biohazard sharps container, and Band-Aid 6. Specimen Labeling a. Name, Patient number, patient location, blood bank #, doctors name, type of specimen, date of collection, and Initials of who obtained specimen. 7. Types of blood a. Whole Blood – is not clotted and consists of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. b. Plasma – fluid of un-clotted specimen , contains a anticoagulant and has fibrinogen present c. Serum – fluid of clotted specimen, collected without any anticoagulant and therefore has no fibrinogen present. 8.
