Light and Life – Chapter 5 Cataracts – Protein conformation (shape) in the eye changes, causing cloudy vision and shifted colour perception. Light acts as both energy and information. Visible light – 380->750 nm Blue (short wavelength, high energy) -> red (long wavelength, low energy) Light – particles of energy (photons/quanta) or waves. Electromagnetic energy that we can see Visible light does not have enough energy to destroy biological light but does have enough to contribute energy to them. It’s also the dominant form of electromagnetic radiation on the planet earth. Pigments absorb light (chlorophyll A, Indigo, retinal, beta carotene) All pigments have conjugated double bonds (alternating single and double bonds) leading to delocalized electron fields. These electron fields can then absorb certain wavelengths of light. Chlorophyll A absorbs light from the red and blue spectrum the best. This can be calculated using a spectrometer.
