GEOGRAPHY 4054 A GEOGRAPHY OF WINE SPRING 2017 Wine and food speak not only to the palate, but the mind and deeper domain of the heart. Like poetry, painting, and song, they are carriers of culture and celebrants of life, returning us to the world of the senses of memory and imagination. --Anon. “Wine is one of the most civilized things in the world, and one of the material things of the world that has been brought to the greatest perfection, and which offers a greater range of enjoyment and appreciation than, possibly, any other purely sensory thing that may be purchased." -- Ernest Hemingway STANDARD STATS Geography 4054 CRN #14389 PEEPS Instructor: John Boyer 121 Major Williams 231-5805 [email protected] Office Hours: Monday on-line, 8:00 to 9:00PM. TEXTS Windows on the World, Complete Wine Course 2017 Edition ; Zraly, Kevin 2016. Available at the bookstore or on-line at Amazon. ISBN-10: 1454921064 or ISBN-13: 978-1454921066 It’s pretty cheap, like $18. Dig it: Drink This Now ; by some dude named Boyer. 2015 Edition It probably sucks, but check it out anyway. It used to be cheap, but now the new print editions are wildly over-priced at bookstores. You can get a sub- par digital version that is slightly cheaper from the publishers website at: - This-Now-aspiring-connoisseur-ebook/dp/B006Y2RBJ6/ref=mt_kindle?_encoding=UTF8&me= A Short History of Wine ; Phillips, Rod. 2000 (will be provided on-line) Wine and the Vine: An Historical Geography of Viticulture and the Wine Trade ; Unwin, Tim. 1996 ( I will provide excerpts from this text to you online) Various other short articles, which will be posted on Moodle, will be announced in class.

COURSE PLATFORM All the quizzes, tests, and other course materials are located on a separate course platform...they are not on Scholar or Canvas or any other VT system, mainly because they can’t handle our numbers, intensity, and wine-drinking powers. The outside course platform is called Moodle, and you MUST log on to it in the first week of class in order to get going and get your grades recorded for the course.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
