PPD 245 Midterm 1 Study Guide 17/10/2007 05:46:00 Annexation The legal incorporation of a territory into another geo-political entitiy The most famous one was in 1898 when the five burrows were combined to  form New York It provides the means for a city to grow and it brings businesses and jobs to  the area A city cannot grow without the ability to annex other areas This way the tax base will increase People were fed up with the growth of rustbelts and thus moved to sunbelts Doesn’t creat jobs, just moves them Baldwin Hills Village An LA  housing development in the 40’s based on the greenbelt idea There were single family homes of diversified hosing Key elements include garden courts, recreation centers, and  Superblocks  which are just blocks that are much bigger than usual with greater setbacks  and bound by widely-spaced, high-speed, circulating routes—not local  streets. It was important because it was an attempt to make affordable housing in an  urban setting AND because it offered  diversified  high income, very rare at the time Central Business District Consists of a concentration of retail and commercial buildings It doesn’t work because areas switch around and mesh as they grow, and  there is no room for growth It’s the core of the concentric zone theory as well as some other models People also didn’t like it because they didn’t want to drive that far
