Greenbelt Cities – HOLC- The Hoover Administration came up with the Home Owners Loan Corporation 1933-1936 – supported homeowners, tries to keep people in their homes. They gave out loans to a million households. They gave loans to stable areas because then loans are stable. They decide which areas are stable based on race and class. The suburbs are safe areas to give money and the inner city is instable. Interstate highway system - You can’t have suburbs the way we have them today without the highway systems. The highway system created all new sorts of opportunities for growth. 1950’s Jane Jacobs - was an American-born Canadian urbanist, writer and activist. She is best known for The Death and Life of Great American Cities (1961), a powerful critique of the urban renewal policies of the 1950s in the United States Levittown – 1947 Levittown is the name of some large suburban developments created in the United States of America by William Levitt and his company Levitt & Sons.
